Celtic Song and Dance – Featuring Tony DeMarco Trio and Darrah Carr Dance

Musicians

Preeminent Celtic fiddler, Tony DeMarco is joined by guitarist, bouzouki player and singer Alan Murray, and Irish pipes player. Jerry O’Sullivan. DeMarco was recently dubbed by the New York Times as the “Tradfather” of sligo fiddling, which is known for its ornamentation with quick and flowing bowing. Alan Murray hails from Glasgow, Scotland, where he grew up playing the whistle and later guitar. Eventually moving to New York City, he has established himself as an in-demand performer and teacher on the Irish music scene. He has played and toured around the world with many of the finest traditional musicians and acts today, including Niall and Cillian Vallely, Eileen Ivers, Colin Farrell, Paul Brock, Battlefield Band, and FourWinds. O’Sullivan is considered by many to be one of Americas’s foremost pipers.

Dancers

Since 1998, the Bessie Award nominated company Darrah Carr Dance has created a sensational and unique blend of traditional Irish step and contemporary modern dance. The company draws from Irish music, step dance footwork, and spatial patterns to create high-energy, rhythmically based work that is accessible to a broad audience. Artistic Director Darrah Carr calls her style ModERIN: a playful combination of the words modern (dance) and ERIN (an Irish American reference to Ireland).

Recent New York City performance highlights include: NBC’s “The Today Show,“ a guest performance with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, the company’s annual season at The Irish Arts Center, the annual NYC Irish Dance Festival, and the “Stam-pede“ Percussive Dance Festival at Symphony Space. The company has performed at venues throughout the United States including MASS MoCA, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and the JFK Museum (Massachusetts), and the San Jose Fleadh (California). They have also appeared at the Toronto Fringe Festival, the Hunter Mountain Celtic Festival, and at the Bank of Ireland Arts Center in Dublin. In addition, they frequently conduct national tours with The Andy Cooney Band.

Featured dancers in this performance are Alexandra Williamson, Michelle Esch, Jonathan Matthews-Guzman, Caitlin McNeil Kelaghan.
